Over the life of a light fitting, power consumption, capital and maintenance costs need to be considered. The life of a typical fluorescent is less than 5000 hrs; that of an LED over 50,000 hrs. So in a comparable life cycle, more than 9 tubes would be needed to match the LED set. The capital cost of the 10 tubes would be around 1.5p per lumen – roughly similar 3 x the capital cost of the LEDS. The additional labour cost of 9 replacements makes the fluorescent lamp substantially more expensive. So even at today's efficacy, an LED fixture is more cost effective over a 3 year life, than a fluorescent one. The life cycle carbon cost is also substantially less for the LED fixture - as the 9 tubes carry a much higher carbon cost than the one set of LEDs.
